AFA Awards Thompson H.H. Arnold Award

September 17, 2024

NATIONAL Harbor, Md. Sept. 17, 2024 — The Air & Space Forces Association awarded the “H.H. Arnold Award” to Gen. David “DT” Thompson, USAF (Ret.) at the 2024 Air, Space & Cyber Conference for his outstanding contribution to national defense by a military member. Named after Air Force legend Gen. Henry H. “Hap” Arnold, the award was presented by Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, Chief of Space Operations Gen. B. Chance Saltzman, AFA Chair of the Board Brig. Gen. Bernie Skoch, USAF (Ret.), and AFA President & CEO Lt. Gen. Burt Field, USAF (Ret.).

Thompson made history in October 2020 as the first Vice Chief of Space Operations for the newly established U.S. Space Force. He was instrumental in organizing, training, and equipping space forces, establishing Space Force Headquarters, and building an agile force structure, expanding from 2,000 to more than 16,000 Guardians.

Before the Space Force’s formation, Thompson served as a key liaison between the Pentagon and Congress, supporting the creation of the new service. With a career spanning roles in operations, acquisition, and command at all levels, his leadership has been pivotal to U.S. space capabilities.

Thompson holds a Bachelor’s in Astronautical Engineering from the U.S. Air Force Academy and two master’s degrees. His accolades include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, and Bronze Star. Since retiring, he has served on several boards, including the Aerospace Corporation’s Board of Trustees.

“General Thompson’s leadership has been crucial to the growth and success of the U.S. Space Force,” said Lt. Gen. Burt Field, USAF (Ret.). “We are honored to recognize his service with the 2024 H.H. Arnold Award.”

The Air & Space Forces Association proudly presents the 2024 H.H. Arnold Award to Gen. David “DT” Thompson.

Congratulations, Gen. Thompson!
